STEINS;GATE is one of the leading science suspense anime broadcast in 2011. The primary theme of the story is "time travel. The main character, Rintaro Okabe (a.k.a. Okarin), takes on the time paradox caused by influencing the past.

Relationship between Okarin and Mayushii

Shiina Mayuri (a.k.a. Mayushii) appears as Okarin's childhood friend. The two are very close, and one would think that a romantic relationship between the two would be depicted anyway, but wait, they get together with another heroine, Kurisu Makise (a.k.a. Chris).

Eh? I thought Okarin likes Mayushii.

We will dig as deep as we can.

Familial feelings

Okarin and Mayushii are childhood friends, and Okarin is very protective of Mayushii. But this is because he is aware of Mayushii as "the one to protect," and he feels more like a younger sister or family member than a romantic partner.

Mayushii's character is very innocent and pure.

It is more like a familial love than a romantic love, as they protect Mayushii, who is such a "pure and precious being".

Differences from Kurisu

Throughout the story, it is Chris to whom Okarin's romantic feelings are directed. Although Okarin and Chris argue a lot in the beginning of the story, they gradually come to understand each other and build a deep bond. As the story progresses, their love for saving Mayushii and their love for saving Chris clearly differ.

Both Okarin and Chris become aware of this, leading to the confession scene at the climax of the film.

Mayushii's own words and actions

In fact, Mayushii herself does not have romantic feelings for Okarin. She calls him "Okarin" and considers him so special that she always sticks close to him, but it is still affection as a family member or friend.

From Mayushii's actions and lines, there is no indication that she is conscious of Okarin as a love interest.

Throughout the story, Mayushii's feelings toward Okarin are those of familial love and security, and she is not portrayed as a romantic object.

summary

In the first episode of the anime, the two were very close, and it seemed to be a given that the relationship would develop as a romantic one, but it was refreshing to see it digested not as a romantic one, but as a familial feeling.

If you have never seen this popular and very story-driven anime, I highly recommend that you watch it, not only because of the relationship between the two, but also because of its in-depth exploration of the difficult scientific theory of time travel.
